OUR MISSION

Our mission at The Historic First Baptist Church of Cheswold is to share the love of Jesus Christ and lead people into a right relationship with Him. We are committed to equipping believers for spiritual growth, fostering a welcoming and compassionate community, and living out God’s Word. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we seek to evangelize the lost, serve those in need, and make disciples of all ages for Christ.

We EXALT

"And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself."
John 12:32 NKJV

We EDIFY

"Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing. And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves."
1 Thessalonians 5:11–13 NKJV

We EVANGELIZE

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen."
Matthew 28:19–20 NKJV

HISTORY

The Historic First Baptist Church of Cheswold was organized in January 1953 as a mission and formally became a church in July of that same year. Worship services were initially held in a building on Road 42, leading from Cheswold to Kenton, Delaware, until the congregation purchased the current property on Rose Bowl Road. Through consistent prayer and steadfast dedication, the congregation moved into its new home—what is now known as The Historic First Baptist Church of Cheswold—on October 17, 1954, located at 291 Rose Bowl Road, Dover, Delaware 19901.

The church began with just seven faithful members, who initially worshiped in the lower level prior to the construction of the main sanctuary. Through perseverance and prayer, a loan was secured from the Farmer’s Bank of the State of Delaware to erect the church building, which was completed on April 14, 1959. By the grace of God, a Mortgage Burning Service was held on Saturday, August 31, 1963, in celebration of the church becoming debt-free.

Despite fluctuations in membership over the years, the church became known for its unwavering community involvement and its commitment to serving those in need. Among its most impactful ministries was a longstanding prison outreach. First Baptist Church of Cheswold became a spiritual home for members of the New Hope Choir from the Delaware Correctional Center. This choir held the national distinction of being the first of its kind to minister in churches, schools, and public auditoriums across the state—blessing countless congregations through song and testimony.

Of particular significance were the Gospel Marathons—twelve hours of continuous praise—as well as special occasions such as Pennsylvania Day (sponsored by Sister Frances Ruiz Mena and Sister Thelma Driggus), Hope Family and Friends Day, and various events launched by the Willing Workers ministry. During the church’s 28th Anniversary on July 12, 1981, another Mortgage Burning Service was held, this time celebrating the acquisition of additional property. Other key accomplishments during this season included expanding the sanctuary, furnishing choir and trustee rooms, renovating the kitchen and dining areas, installing a baptismal pool, and acquiring a second organ.

During the tenure of Reverend Philemon Hill, his passionate leadership, tireless energy, and sincere commitment were instrumental in advancing the church’s outreach and evangelistic mission.

By the grace and mercy of God, on April 28, 2024, The Historic First Baptist Church of Cheswold joyfully celebrated its 70th Church Anniversary. Truly, the Lord has sustained us, for we have stood firm, praising and trusting in Him and in the truth of His Word.

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
Matthew 7:24, NKJV

To God be the glory—for all the great things He has done at The Historic First Baptist Church of Cheswold!

OUR VISION

At The Historic First Baptist Church of Cheswold (HFBCC), our mission is to share the love of Jesus Christ and to lead all people into a right relationship with Him. We are committed to encouraging and equipping men and women to develop a deep, personal intimacy with God and to become active members of a loving, caring, and Christ-centered faith community.

HFBCC strives to be a welcoming place where every child of God can come to know Him and live a life that is pleasing in His sight, according to the truth of His Word. We are guided by the Great Commission:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Matthew 28:19, NKJV

Motivated by Scripture, we aim to evangelize the lost, care for the needy, and bring comfort to the brokenhearted and distressed.
